Population
According to data of the Seventh National Population Census of Yueyang City, as of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, the city's permanent population totaled 5,501,922, a decrease of 424,162 compared with 2010.
Among nine districts and counties (county-level cities), there are:
Six counties and districts with a population between 500,000 and 1 million, namely Yueyanglou District, Pingjiang County, Miluo City, Xiangyin County, Yueyang County, and Huarong County;
Two county-level cities and districts with a population between 200,000 and 500,000, namely Linxiang City and Junshan District; and,
One district ¨C Yunxi District, with a population less than 200,000.
Since 2010, some new changes have been seen in sex composition, educational attainment, and age structure.
Sex composition moves towards balance. The sex ratio (female=100, male to female) was 104.92, down 2.27 from the previous census in 2010.
Population quality continues to improve. The persons with university education per 100,000 persons went up from 6,852 to 9,691; the persons with senior secondary school education up from 22,977 to 25,642. Of the city¡¯s permanent population, the average years of schooling for people aged 15 and above increased from 9.58 years to 10.06 years. The illiteracy rate dropped from 1.76% to 1.27%.
Aging population has increased. The share of people in the age group of 0-14 was up by 2.44 percentage points, that of the age group of 15-59 was down by 8.83 percentage points, that of the age group of 60 and over was up by 6.39 percentage points and that of the age group of 65 and over was up by 5.88 percentage points.
