53 Provincial Historical and Cultural Streets Announced

The Hunan government announced a list of 53 provincial historical and cultural streets to better protect and inherit excellent historical and cultural heritage of the province, according to the Hunan Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on October 10. Changsha’s Taiping and Chaozong streets, Xiangtan’s Yaowan Street, Yueyang’s Dongting South Road, Chenzhou’s Yuhou Street, Yongzhou’s Liuzi Street, and Jishou’s Qianzhou Ancient Town made the list.

The historical and cultural street is an important part of the historical and cultural heritage protection system, an important fundamental for urban characteristics, and has important historical and cultural values. Of the 53 historical and cultural streets, 12 are located in Yongzhou, registering the largest number among 13 cities and one prefecture.

The Hunan government urged relevant departments at all levels to implement the new development philosophy, coordinate historical and cultural heritage protection and economic and social development, and effectively strengthen the protection and management of historical and cultural streets. Governments at prefectural- and county-level shall draw up plans to protect historical and cultural streets, make combined efforts with land use planning, and strengthen the implementation of the plans. The Hunan Provincial Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and the Hunan Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics should strengthen guidance and supervision of historical and cultural streets protection.

The 53 historical and cultural streets are as follows:

Changsha: Taiping Street, Chaozong Street, and Tongguan Old Street;

Hengyang: Beizhi Street and former Jianxiang diesel engine factory;

Zhuzhou: Chaling County Sanzong and Sizong Streets, Chaling County Menqian Street, and Chaling Nanenshang Street;

Xiangtan: Yaowan Ancient Street, and Chengzheng Street;

Shaoyang: Wugang Xizhi Street and Wugang Muhuo Street;

Yueyang: Dongting South Road and Lucheng Nanzheng and Beizheng Streets;

Yiyang: Dongmenkou (East Gate), Stone Wharf, and Anhua County Tangjiaguan Village

Chenzhou: Yuhou Street, Shoujia Historic and Cultural Neighborhood, Liujia Historic and Cultural Neighborhood, Guiyang County Shizi Street, Guiyang County Qili Street, Guiyang County Yanhang Street, Rucheng County Zhongda Street-Banbian Street-Shanghuangmen Street, and Rucheng County Jinjiang Village;

Yongzhou: Liuzi Street, Jiefang South Road, Laobutou, Daoxian County Kougong Street, Daoxian County Wanli Street, Daoxian County Cishan Street, Ningyuan County Dongwai Street, Ningyuan County Dingzi Street, Ningyuan County Nanmen Street, JiangyongCounty Sanyuangong Ancient Village, Jiangyong County Chen Family Street, and Jiangyong County Xiaopu Street;

Huaihua: Hongjiang Ancient Commercial Town Gaopo Street, Hongjiang Ancient Commercial Town Old Street, Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County Yao Family Alley, Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County Wanshou Street, Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County Huangjia Street, Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County Sanxiang Alley, Yuanling County Longxing Lecture Temple, Yuanling County Shengli Park, Yuanling County Malu Alley, Hongjiang Nanzheng Street, and Hongjiang Beizheng Street;

Loudi: Xinhua Xiangdong Street-Dongzheng Street and Xinhua Lingjiaotang;

Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture: Jishou Qianzhou Ancient Town, Fenghuang Ancient Town, and Fenghuang County’s Shawan.
