On July 30, 130 Vanuatu national athletes celebrated the 37th Independence Anniversary at Hunan Institute of Science and Technology, Yueyang. They are under training in Hunan.

Vanuatu team leader remarked, "Since the diplomatic relation was established between China and Vanuatu, the Chinese government has continued to assist us in various fields." He spoke highly of the Chinese government and its people's long-term supports and disinterested assistances for the economic and social development of Vanuatu. "Our athletic skills have improved greatly thanks to an assistance project launched this year. I believe in this year's Pacific Mini Games, Vanuatu athletes will achieve excellent results. It will be the best way to express our sincere gratitude to the Chinese counterparts." He added.

It was learnt that the athletic technique assistance project was officially launched on May 11, 2017. It was organized by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China, undertaken by China Sports International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd., and executed by Hunan Sports Industry Group Co., Ltd. The Chinese government will provide 150-day-training for more than 190 Vanuatu athletes, coaches, and technical officers, in sports events such as tennis, table tennis, track and field, karate, taekwondo, and football, so as to help improve their sports competitiveness and achieve good results at the 10th Pacific Mini Games.

The project was the first athletic assistance made by the Chinese government for the Vanuatu government, which is an important measure to implement the national "Belt and Road" initiative.
