Overwintering migratory birds in Dongting Lake.

"Every day an increasing number of migratory birds coming from northern China, and even Siberia, arrive at Dongting Lake to spend the winter,Ħħ said Yao Yi, chief engineer of the Hunan East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve Administration. Yao added that on October 10, nature reserve staff observed 69 white spoonbills on the Caisang Lake and more than 30 white spoonbills in the waters of the south of the Dongting Lake Bridge.

The "spearhead" of migratory birds currently observed by the staff include national second-class protected animals: white spoonbill, grey crane, white-fronted goose, bean geese, swan goose, Eurasian curlew, and the internationally endangered species of lesser white-fronted goose. As the temperatures begin to drop, the number of migratory birds entering Dongting Lake will increase day by day. The migrating bird peak will be in November. According to the analysis of the overwintering migratory birds in previous years, it is estimated that the number of waterbirds in Dongting Lake will reach 250,000 this year. By then, East Dongting Lake will enter the best bird watching season.
