Zhangshugang Chili Enters Hunan¡¯s Agro-product Geographical Indication System

The Hunan Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs recently announced Hunan¡¯s newly approved agro-products with geographical indications. Xiangyin Zhangshugang chili is on the list, together with other five products.

Zhangshugang chili is a traditional local specialty, with a centurial history of breeding and cultivation. In 2013, it was granted as a national geographical indication certification mark. It is also a famous and superior agro-product approved by the Ministry of Agriculture, and Hunan¡¯s famous brand. This year, the chili plantations in Zhangshugang Town has an area of 7,500 mu (about 500 ha.). The annual output is estimated to reach 8,000 tons, worth 150 million CNY.

The agro-product geographical indication is a strategic project of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council. It aims to boost integrated development of industries, promote traditional farming culture, and facilitate rural revitalization and poverty alleviation. As of now, there are 2,594 agro-products granted with the geographical indication by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
